What a COI means

A Certificate of Insurance, or COI, is a document that shows a moving company carries insurance coverage. Many apartment buildings, condos, co-ops, high-rises, and commercial properties require a COI before a move.

Why buildings require it

Buildings want documentation before movers use elevators, hallways, loading docks, or shared spaces. A COI helps property managers confirm coverage before the move starts.

What customers should ask their building

Ask for the building’s COI requirements, certificate holder information, additional insured language, required coverage limits, elevator reservation rules, loading dock times, and move-day access instructions.

When to handle it

Do not wait until the day before the move. COI requests should be discussed early so the mover and building have time to coordinate.
